There *are* homophobic slurs in Japanese, but ゲスやろう (gesu yarou; asshole) and ヘンタイじじい (hentai jiji; old pervert) are, afaik, not among them.

The characters hate this dude BECAUSE HE'S A CHILD MOLESTER, not because he's gay. (2/5)

And yes, the fact that the pedophile is gay is itself a harmful stereotype, but there's at least an attempt w/n the JPN script (esp w/ the burgeoning Ash/Eiji relationship) to draw lines & mitigate that connection.

...by using specifically homophobic slurs, they're constantly, consistently conflating the two.

Which is not only a good way to uphold harmful stereotypes, it's also changing the way the story & characters are read. It's going *against* the original text. (4/5)
